Francesca Woodman
De 1963 à 1971, Francesca Woodman fréquente l'école publique de Boulder. En 1972, elle part pour Andover,Massachusetts, et intègre la Abbot Academy. Influencée par son professeur Wendy Snyder Mac Neil, elle découvre la photographie et poursuit dans cette voie artistique.
En 1975, elle décide de finir ses études au lycée de Boulder (Boulder High), d'où elle sort diplômée en juin. En septembre de la même année, elle entre à la Rhode Island School of Design (Providence). Elle y obtient une bourse d'étude qui lui permet de passer un an à Rome. Elle y réalise sa première exposition personnelle à la librairie-galerie Maldoror en mars 1978.
Elle finit sa scolarité et s'installe à New York en 1979. L'année suivante, elle entre à la Mac Dowell colony de Peterborough (New Hampshire). En janvier 1981 paraît son premier livre, Some Disordered Interior Geometries.
Elle se suicide en se défenestrant de son appartement new-yorkais à l'âge de 22 ans1.
Malgré la brièveté de sa carrière, son œuvre continue d'avoir une grande influence sur la création photographique contemporaine.
Francesca Woodman made her first photographic works at the early age of thirteen and from the beginning her body was both the subject and object in her work, showing it in various stages of transformation, deformation, alteration and effacement. The very first photograph taken by Woodman, Self-portrait at Thirteen (1972), shows the artist sitting at the end of a sofa in an un-indentified space, wearing a oversized jumper and jeans, arm loosely hanging on the armrest, her face obscured by a curtain of hair and the foreground blurred by sudden movement, one hand holding a cable linked to the camera. In this first image the main characteristics at the core of Woodman’s short career are clearly visible, her focus on the relationship with her body as both the object of the gaze and the acting subject behind the camera.
